ADA — Freshman Kiersten Schultz (Bethel Park, Pa.) scored five goals in her first collegiate appearance to lead the Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team to a 12-10 victory over Kalamazoo (Mich.) in the 2020 season opener for both teams on a cold evening at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
Junior Sydney Skelding (North Plainfield, N.J./Dublin) added three goals and two assists to also finish with five points on the night to help the Polar Bears (1-0).
Senior Kelli Hill (Worthington) had 13 saves on 23 shots in goal for ONU to pick up the win.
Schultz scored four consecutive goals in a 7:20 span of the first half to cap a 5-0 run and give Ohio Northern a 6-1 lead with 16:45 left in the half.
Skelding scored at the 13:49 mark of the half and ONU led 7-5 at intermission.
Schultz and Skelding each scored in the first five minutes of the second half to push the lead to 9-5.
The two teams would then trade goals until the Hornets (0-1) would score twice in a 2:05 span to get within 12-10 with 6:10 left in the game.
The Northern defense would stiffen and allow only two shots the rest of the way, only one of which was on goal.
Kalamazoo outshot Ohio Northern 28-22 and held a slim 22-21 advantage in ground balls.
Senior Hailey Green (South Lyon, Mich.) scored the first and last goals for ONU.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday with a Noon game at Hiram.
