By Wes Mayberry
ADA — Ohio Northern junior Grace Honigford (West Chester/Lakota East) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Golf Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 18-25.
Honigford shares the honor this week with Otterbein's Becky Williams.
This marks Honigford's third straight OAC Player of the Week accolade this season and the ninth of her career.
The latest recognition comes after Honigford shot a 74-79—153 to finish tied for ninth in a loaded field of 66 golfers on the 5,652-yard, par-72 course at the Berry (Ga.) Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
Her efforts led the Polar Bears as they carded a 310-311—621, breaking the previous 36-hole school record by 18 strokes to finish third in the 12-team field.
The previous school record of 639 was set twice in 2021.
Northern also posted the two lowest 18-hole scores in school history. Monday's 310 was four shots better than the previous record of 314 set at the Capital Classic on Sept. 11, 2021.
The tournament featured six teams ranked in the top 44 nationally in the latest GolfStat power rankings. No. 9 Methodist (N.C.) and No. 33 Sewanee (Tenn.) finished ahead of ONU. Northern defeated No. 24 Oglethorpe (Ga.), No. 18 Otterbein and No. 43 Berry (Ga.).
The Polar Bears (42-3 overall) are done competing in the fall season and will announce their spring schedule in February.
