Women's Basketball ends regular season on six-game win streak with 66-62 win over Mount Union

ALLIANCE — The Ohio Northern women's basketball team ended its regular season on a six-game win streak with a 66-62 win at Mount Union on Saturday afternoon.
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (18-7 Overall, 14-4 OAC), Mount Union (12-13 Overall, 7-11 OAC).
- Venue: Timken Gymnasium — Alliance, Ohio.
The Game
- Senior Brooke Allen (Woodville/Woodmore) and junior Mackenzie Suprano (Cutler/Waterford) led the Polar Bears with 16 points each.
- Senior Abi Akamine (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) added 13 points.
- Fifth-year senior Kristen Luersman had a team-high nine rebounds.
- Luersman and senior Abby Dickson (Germantown/Valley View) each had four assists.
- Chelsea Evanich and Elizabeth Mason each led Mount Union with 13 points.
- Northern trailed 15-12 after the first quarter.
- A three-pointer by Suprano in the first minute of the second quarter gave ONU the lead, and they didn't trail the rest of the game.
- The Polar Bears went on a 19-0 run to go up 36-17 with 2:05 left in the second quarter.
- ONU led 39-24 at halftime.
- The Raiders went on a 13-0 run in the third quarter to cut Northern's lead to two, trailing 41-39 with 5:01 left in the third quarter.
- The Polar Bears led 50-43 at the end of the third quarter.
- Mount Union cut the lead to two points, trailing 64-62 with two seconds left in the game, but two free throws from Akamine put the game away for the Polar Bears.
- Ohio Northern made 23-of-57 field goals for 40.4 percent and was 9-of-17 from beyond the arc for 52.9 percent, while Mount Union was 24-of-67 from the floor for 35.8 percent and finished 9-of-33 on 3-pointers for 27.2 percent.
- The Polar Bears made 11-of-14 free throws for 78.6 percent and the Raiders were 5-of-7 from the line for 71.4 percent.
- ONU out-rebounded MTU 43-31.
Notables
- The Polar Bears have clinched a first round bye in the next week's 6-team OAC Tournament.
- By finishing second in the OAC Regular Season standings, ONU will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will host a semifinal game on Thursday night at the ONU Sports Center.
- Ohio Northern is now 53-35 all-time against Mount Union, including a 21-21 record in Alliance.
- Luersman is now 7th in ONU history with 672 career rebounds. She also has scored 826 points in 101 career games.
- Allen ranks second in the OAC in field goal percentage at 55.5 percent.
- This is the 53rd season of Ohio Northern women's basketball. The Polar Bears are now 777-515 all-time in program history for a winning percentage of .601.
- Fifth-year head coach Mark Huelsman is now 86-38 at Ohio Northern, a winning percentage of .694.
