Brynn Serbin scores 13 as Women's Basketball tops Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) 50-43

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Senior Brynn Serbin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) scored 13 points to lead the Ohio Northern women's basketball team to a 50-43 victory at Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon at the W&J Tip-Off Tournament at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears improve to 2-0, while the Presidents fall to 1-1.
Serbin, who added six rebounds, four steals and two assists to her stat line, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament.
Sophomore Layla Dials (Willard) added 11 points and junior Kristen Luersman (Fort Jennings) added five points and a game-high 10 rebounds for ONU.
Dials joined Serbin on the All-Tournament Team.
WJ was led by Bryn Bezjak with a game-high 18 points.
Northern used an 13-2 run to grab an 18-8 lead with 4:59 left in the second quarter and extended the lead to 27-15 at halftime.
The Presidents rallied, scoring the final eight points of the third period, to get within 35-34 entering the fourth quarter.
But the Polar Bears would respond with an 11-0 run to open the final period to take a 46-34 lead with 5:26 remaining in the contest.
ONU made 17-of-52 field goals for 32.7 percent, was 4-of-16 from 3-point range for 25.0 percent and made 12-of-19 free throws for 63.2 percent. WJ hit 16-of-57 field goal attempts for 28.1 percent, was 5-of-26 from beyond the arc for 19.2 percent and hit 6-of-7 free throws for 85.7 percent.
Ohio Northern out-rebounded Washington & Jefferson 49-32 behind Luersman's 10 boards.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. road contest at Anderson (Ind.)
