Late run lifts No. 23 Women's Basketball to 62-54 victory at Heidelberg

TIFFIN — Ohio Northern used a 9-0 run late in the second half to post a 62-54 Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball victory at Heidelberg Wednesday evening at Sieberling Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears extend their winning streak to seven consecutive games and are now 18-4 overall and 11-4 in OAC action, while the Student Princes fall to 11-11, 4-11.
With the score tied at 45-all, freshman Britt Lauck and junior Kaitlyn Theisen each made a pair of free throws to spark a 9-0 run and give ONU a commanding 54-45 advantage with just 3:53 left in the game.
Lauck's free throws at the 8:02 mark put ONU ahead for good at 47-45 and Theisen's two free throws put ONU up 49-45 with 7:15 remaining.
Sophomore Karissa Steffas followed with a basket at the 5:13 mark and senior Cenzie Yoder followed with a pair of free throws at the 4:30 mark to put the Polar Bears ahead 53-45.
Senior Taylor Hermiller made a free throw at the 3:53 mark to cap the run and make it a 54-45 game.
Sophomore Carly Thomas scored with 3:12 remaining to give ONU its largest lead of the night at 56-46.
Junior Jordan Kimes had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Yoder had 12 points and seven boards for ONU.
Heidelberg was led by Kathleen Phillips with a career-high 23 points.
Ohio Northern made good on 20-of-50 field goal attempts for 40.0 percent, while Heidelberg made 18-of-56 shots for 32.1 percent.
The Polar Bears will return to action Saturday against Mount Union at 3 pm at the ONU Sports Center.
