Sophomore Ian McVey leads #18 Men's Cross Country to third place finish at NCAA III Great Lakes Regional

HOLLAND, Mich. — Sophomore Ian McVey (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) finished sixth overall at the NCAA III Great Lakes Regional to lead the No. 18-ranked Ohio Northern men's cross country team to a third place finish Saturday afternoon in Holland, Mich.
The Polar Bears improve to 96-7 on the season.
With the sixth place finish, McVey earned an automatic bid the NCAA III Championships in Louisville, Ky. next Saturday.
McVey, seniors Andrew Harden (Vandalia/Vandalia-Butler), Kase Schalois (Van Wert/Van Wert) and junior Bobby Borger (Perrysburg/Perrysburg) all earned Great Lakes All-Region honors after finishing in the top-35 of the race in a field of 249 runners.
Harden and Schalois posted top-25 finishes for Northern as Harden finished 15th in 25:12.6 and Schalois finished 24th in 25:27.6.
Borger and junior Matt Molinaro (Sterling Heights, Mich./De La Salle) finished 35th and 41st overall in 25:45.0 and 25:55.4, respectively.
Also posting a top-7 finish for the Polar Bears were junior Samuel Boyd (Killbuck/West Holmes) who finished 67th in 26:19.1 and senior Cully Gordon (Holmesville/West Holmes) who finished 75th in 26:29.4.
"Our guys has really good races today," said head coach Jason Maus. "We had some guys really step up and help us out a lot. Our entire top-7 ran great races and made this a great team race."
The top-2 teams in each of the eight regional races earned automatic bids the the NCAA III Championships and make up 16 of the 32 team field.
"We would have loved to finish second and get the automatic bid to the national meet, but we feel really good about our chances of getting an at large bid," said Maus. "As one of the better teams coming into this race I feel like we handeled the pressue really well."
Northern will look to be one of 16 other teams across the country to receive an at large bid to the NCAA III Championships in Louisville, Ky. next Saturday.
The field of 32 teams will be set tomorrow afternoon.
