Senior Ian McVey finishes 14th in the 5,000-meter run on final day of 2019 NCAA III Outdoor Track & Field Championships

GENEVA — Senior four-time All-American Ian McVey (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) finished 14th in the 5,000-meter run in 15:22.39 on a hot Saturday afternoon on the final day of the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the SPIRE Institute.
McVey ends his career as a two-time All-American in the 5,000-meter run indoors and a two-time All-American in cross country.
He was seventh after the first 1000 meters, was ninth after 2000 and 3000 meters and was 11th after 4000 meters.
"It's disappointing for Ian to end his career this way, but the heat really took its toll on the field," ONU head coach Jason Maus said. "In 88-degree weather if turns into a race of survival. Not many guys had anything left at the end. He had a great career though - four times an All-American and five NCAA Championships appearances."
McVey was seeded 10th out of 20 runners entering the race with a qualifying effort of 14:24.24. The top eight in each event earn All-America honors.
He is a two-time All-American indoors in the 5,000 meters. He finished seventh in 14:34.94 this March and was fifth in 2018 in 14:34.21.
This was his first appearance at the NCAA III Outdoor Championships.
McVey is also a two-time All-American in cross country, finishing fifth at this fall's championship in 24:37 and 10th at the 2017 meet in 24:37.
