Holden Cubberley wins 1-meter title, leads Men's Swimming and Diving on third day of OAC Championships

AKRON — Junior Holden Cubberley (Celina) won his third consecutive title in the 1-meter diving to lead the Ohio Northern men's swimming and diving team on the third day of the 2024 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships meet on Friday night.

The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (8-4 overall)
- Venue: Ocasek Natatorium - Akron, Ohio
- Ohio Northern is in second place out of six teams with 455 points after 13 of the 20 events over the four-day meet.
- John Carroll leads the team standings with 612.5 points. Mount Union is third with 406 points, Baldwin Wallace is fourth with 285.5 points, Wilmington is fifth with 242 points and Heidelberg is sixth with 9 points.
Meet Highlights
- Cubberley finished his 11 dives with 515.25 points.
- Senior Charlie Spyker (Harrod/Shawnee) earned All-Conference accolades in the 1-meter diving for the third consecutive season, finishing third with 460.65 points.
- The Polar Bears opened the evening session by earning All-OAC honors in the 200 medley relay, as Spyker, sophomore Nathan Clark (Cleves/Elder), sophomore Selby Wilt (Findlay) and junior Brady Horgan (New Richmond/McNicholas) finished second in 1:32.19.
- Sophomore Nathan Clark (Cleves/Elder) repeated as an All-OAC performer in the 100 breast, finishing third in :57.17.
- Sophomore Long Huynh (Billings, Mt./West) earned All-OAC honors with a third place finish in the 400 I.M. in 4:15.41.
- Freshmen Riley Verb (Bluffton), Diego Rios (Chandler, Ariz./Arizona College Prep) and Josh Ray (Howell, Mich./Hartland) also placed in the top eight of the 400 I.M. for ONU.
- Verb was fourth in 4:15.66, Rios was fifth in 4:16.37 and Ray was eighth in 4:29.06.
- Sophomore Selby Wilt (Findlay) was fourth in the 100 back in :51.17. Sophomore Simon Bopple (Cleveland/Shaker Heights) was sixth in :51.99 in the event.
- Junior Ben Starling (Mansfield/Lexington) was fifth in the 100 breast in :59.57 and Ray followed in sixth in :59.63 in the race.
- In the 200 free, junior Brady Horgan (New Richmond/McNicholas) touched in seventh place in 1:43.96.
Notables
- The meet consists of 20 events, including 13 individual races, five relays and two diving events.
- The top three individuals and top two relays in each event earn All-Conference honors.
- The top 16 finishers in each individual event and the two diving events score team points.
- There were seven events contested on Friday.
- Both Cubberley and Spyker have qualified for the NCAA III Central Regionals March 1-2 at Denison.
- Ohio Northern has won 12 OAC Championships titles since 2005.
- Austin Veltman is 31-17 in his sixth season as head coach of the Polar Bears.
