ADA — Ohio Northern freshman Holden Cubberley (Celina), senior Jeremy Adams (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and sophomore Charlie Spyker (Harrod/Shawnee) were named to the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American Team for the 2021-22 season.
Cubberley was a First Team selection, and Adams and Spyker were named to the Second Team.
Cubberley, a graphic design major, had a stellar freshman season in 2021-22, earning Ohio Athletic Conference Diver of the Year and winning conference titles in both 1- and 3-meter diving.
Cubberley broke the school record in the 3-meter diving competition with 500.50 points for 11 dives, surpassing the previous record of 493.00 points set by Braden Kuhn in 2018.
He went on to place ninth on the 1-meter board and fifth on the 3-meter board at the NCAA Division III Regional Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich., which qualified him for the national championships in both competitions. At the Division III Championships, Cubberley placed 18th on the 1-meter board and 19th on the 3-meter board.
Adams, a mechanical engineering major, was another standout for the Polar Bears this season. He was named OAC Men's Swimmer of the Week five times, broke two school records and hauled in six All-OAC finishes to give him 16 in his career.
He was also a 2022 Clyde Lamb Award winner and a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District 7 At-Large selection.
Adams was All-OAC in the 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 I.M., 400 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay this season.
He finished second in the 100 breast with a new school-record time of :55.36, besting the old mark by four seconds to earn his fourth straight All-OAC accolade in the event. Adams' leadoff time of :45.81 in the 400 free relay was also a program-best, as he edged the previous school record of :45.84 set by Eric Chen in 2016 en route to a second-place All-OAC showing for the group.
Spyker, a construction management major, joined Cubberley at the regional diving meet where he placed 25th after earning All-OAC honors with a third-place showing in 1-meter diving. He was also All-Conference in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.
The CSCAA named 1,206 swimmers and divers to its 2021-22 Scholar All-American Team. The award recognizes students who achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and were invited to compete at their respective national championship.
To qualify for First Team All-America, student-athletes earned a minimum GPA of 3.5 and participated in their national championship. Second Team selections also earned a 3.5 GPA or higher and achieved a "B" time standard for the national championship or participated at a diving zone qualification meet.
As a group, the Polar Bears were selected as a Scholar All-America team for the 2021-22 season by the CSCAA on the basis of their Spring 2022 GPAs.
The Polar Bears finished the season with a 5-3 dual meet record and placed second in the OAC Championships under fourth-year head coach Austin Veltman.
