Men's Soccer pulls away in second half for 5-1 win over Baldwin Wallace to clinch top-3 OAC finish

ADA — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team scored four second-half goals to pull away for a 5-1 win over Baldwin Wallace in Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night.

The Basics

The Match

• The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard first courtesy of a goal on a penalty kick from Julian Kieres in the 19th minute.
• A Baldwin Wallace own goal evened the score at 1-1 in the 27th minute.
• With the score still tied, junior Ryan Sommerfeld (Dublin/Coffman) opened the second-half scoring with a goal in the 48th minute.
• Roughly 12 minutes later, freshman Colin Gottron (Dayton/Centerville) made it a 3-1 ONU lead on a goal assisted by senior Will Shaffer (Galena/St. Francis DeSales).
• Sommerfeld made it 4-1 with his second goal of the game, which came in the 79th minute on assists from junior Brenden Gervers (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and freshman Enzo Bordogna (Almont, Mich./Brother Rice).
• Junior Joe Roberts closed the scoring with a highlight goal, tucking the ball into the top left corner of the goal on an assist from junior Ryan Parker (Lexington) in the 84th minute.
• Junior Lucas Hickey (Conroe, Tex./Oak Ridge) played all 80-plus minutes in goal for ONU before giving way to junior Brian Watkins (Hilliard/Darby).
• The Polar Bears out-shot the Yellow Jackets 30-4 in the game and finished with a 12-1 edge in corner kicks.

Notables

• Ohio Northern has clinched a top-3 finish in the OAC standings. A win in Saturday's regular-season finale at Marietta would clinch a top-2 finish and a first-round bye and home semifinal game in the OAC Tournament, which begins on Oct. 31.
• Sommerfeld's two goals increased his season total to 10. He leads the team in goals this season and has a team-high 23 points. He has 38 career points on 15 goals and eight assists.
• Gottron's goal was his fourth of the season.
• Roberts' goal was the first of his career.
• Hickey lowered his season GAA to 1.20.
• ONU now leads the all-time series with Baldwin Wallace by a 32-12-4 margin, including an 18-3-2 mark in Ada. ONU has won eight of the past 11 meetings dating back to 2012.
• Fifth-year head coach Chris Matejka is now 53-26-14 at ONU.
