BEREA — The No. 13 Ohio Northern men's soccer team pushed its winning streak to six games on Wednesday night, topping Baldwin Wallace 5-1 at Tressel Field at George Finnie Stadium.
The Polar Bears (12-2-3 overall, 7-0-1 OAC) extended their current unbeaten streak to 14 games and remain atop the Ohio Athletic Conference standings. With the win, they also clinch a first-round bye and a home semifinal match in next week's OAC tournament.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 11-5-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the OAC.
Fifth-year senior Bryan Kern (Rocky River) led the way for Northern on Wednesday night with two goals.
The Polar Bears also got one goal each from fifth-year senior Levi King (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and sophomores William Shaffer (Galena/St. Francis DeSales) and Jacob Grant (Westerville/North).
King opened the scoring with his sixth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 30th minute. Five of his six goals have come in the last seven games.
The Yellow Jackets were quick to respond with a goal of their own in the 36th minute, as Nick Surowicz netted his 11th goal on the year.
Shaffer's goal gave the Polar Bears a 2-1 lead with an assist from King.
Kern scored the next two goals, both unassisted, in the 58th and 65th minutes to extend the Polar Bear lead to 4-1.
Kern and King are tied for the team lead with six goals, six assists and 18 points each.
Grant capped the scoring in the 75th minute, netting his first career goal on assists from sophomore Ryan Parker (Lexington) and King.
ONU sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Hickey (Conroe, Texas/Oak Ridge) played 87 minutes in goal, recording four saves and improving his season record to 6-0-1.
Northern out-shot the Yellow Jackets 17-10 and finished with an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Polar Bears wrap up regular season action with Senior Night on Saturday when they host Marietta at 7 p.m. Northern can clinch the No. 1 overall seed in the OAC Tournament and their first OAC regular season title since 2015 with a win.
