UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team won 2-1 at John Carroll on Saturday night at Don Shula Stadium to take over first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings.
The Polar Bears improve to 9-2-3 overall and 4-0-1 in the OAC while dropping the Blue Streaks to 9-4-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the OAC.
The victory extended Northern's current unbeaten streak to 11 games, going 8-0-3 since Sept. 4.
Fifth-year senior Levi King (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and sophomore Sam McKee (Mason) both scored for ONU on Saturday.
King scored his fourth goal of the season in the 25th minute on an assist from junior Cade Winchester (Knoxville, Tenn./Alcoa).
King has now found the back of the net in three of the past four games.
JCU answered in the 33rd minute with a goal from Nicholas Felician via an assist from Nicholas Ruggiero, and the teams entered halftime with the score tied at 1-all.
McKee scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal just 1:02 into the second half.
The ONU defense and sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Hickey (Conroe, Texas/Oak Ridge) made that lead hold up as the Polar Bears held on for the victory despite a late flurry of shots from JCU.
The Blue Streaks attempted six shots, including three on goal, over the final 7:10.
Hickey tallied six saves in the game to improve his record to 3-0-1 on the season.
The Blue Streaks finished with a 15-10 edge in shots and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
The Polar Bears return to action on Wednesday at home against OAC foe Wilmington at 7 p.m.
