ADA — A goal from sophomore William Shaffer (Galena/St. Francis DeSales) sent the Ohio Northern men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday night at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 3-2-0 overall while dropping the Battling Bishops to 0-3-2.
In what was a very physical game that featured a combined 25 fouls and nine cards, the teams played to a 0-0 draw at halftime with ONU out-shooting OWU by a 5-2 margin.
It didn't take long for Northern to score in the second half, though, as Shaffer found the back of the net on assists from senior Aaron Shelton (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) and sophomore Ryan Parker (Lexington) in the 53rd minute for his first goal as a Polar Bear.
ONU continued to make things difficult on the OWU offense for the remainder of the night en route to recording its second straight shutout victory.
Senior goalkeeper Josh Ellis (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne) recorded one save for Northern and earned his fourth career shutout.
The Polar Bears finished with a 10-4 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
ONU returns to action on Saturday for a road game at Hanover (Ind.) at 1 p.m.
