ADA — Freshman Ryan Sommerfeld (Dublin/Coffman) scored his first career goal Wednesday night to send the Ohio Northern men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Heidelberg at Kerscher Stadium.
The victory improves the Polar Bears to 8-6-2 overall and 3-3-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while dropping the Student Princes to 5-8-2, 1-3-2.
Wednesday marked the third straight game that a Polar Bear netted his first career goal, as senior Joe Bement (Olmstead Township/Olmstead Falls) and freshman Noah Zebrak (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) did so against Wilmington and John Carroll, respectively.
Junior Daunte George (Bellefontaine) provided the assist on Sommerfield's goal, which came 26:28 into the game.
That goal proved to be the game-winner, as the Polar Bear defense and senior goalkeeper John Lombardo (Solon) held Heidelberg off the scoreboard for all 90 minutes.
Wednesday's game marked Lombardo's sixth shutout of the season and gave him 22 for his career, as he tied Aaron Collins ('05-'08) for third place on ONU's all-time leaderboard in that category.
Lombardo made two saves in the game while Heidelberg senior goalkeeper Sigurd Ilestad finished with eight.
Both teams attempted 18 shots in the game with matching tallies of seven in the first half and 11 in the second half.
The Polar Bears had more shots on goal, 9-4.
ONU also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Next up for the Polar Bears is Saturday's home game against Capital, which kicks off at 1 p.m. at Kerscher Stadium.
