NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team netted a pair of second-half goals to break a 1-all tie and come away with a 3-1 win over Westminster (Pa.) Friday night at UPMC Sports Complex.
The victory improves the Polar Bears to 3-2-1 overall while dropping the Titans to 3-4-0.
Senior Levi King (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) led the way for ONU with one goal and one assist.
Junior Jacob Westerkamp (Beavercreek) and senior Cameron Picard (Dayton/Wayne) tallied the Polar Bears' other two goals while senior Matt Studenic (Wadsworth) added an assist.
Westerkamp got the scoring started for ONU with his first goal of the season in the 22nd minute on an assist from King.
Northern took that 1-0 lead into halftime but watched it disappear when Westminster's Nick Iregui netted his team-leading fourth goal of the season on an assist from Marc Esqueda almost 11 minutes into the second half.
It didn't take long for ONU to respond, however, as a pass from Studenic created a shot from King to the upper-left part of the goal that found the back of the net for his first score of the season.
That 2-1 edge held into the final four minutes of the game when the Titans' Kai Haseyama attempted a potential tying shot toward the upper-center part of the goal, but ONU senior goalkeeper John Lombardo (Solon) made the last of his four saves in the game to preserve the lead.
With time ticking down, the Polar Bears scored one final time on an unassisted goal from Picard with just two seconds left, marking his first goal of the season.
Northern out-shot Westminster 26-10 in the game, including 13-3 in the first half and 13-7 in the second, and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Westerkamp, King, Picard, senior Seth Gundlach (Wilmington) and junior Daunte George (Bellefontaine) finished with four shots each to lead ONU in that department.
Next up for the Polar Bears is a second straight game in Pennsylvania, as they are set to take on Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh on Saturday at 1 p.m.
