HOLLAND, Mich. — The Ohio Northern and Hope (Mich.) men's soccer teams played 110 minutes Saturday at Van Andel Stadium, but neither team was able to find the back of the net in what resulted in a scoreless draw in double overtime.
The Polar Bears (0-1-1 overall) and Flying Dutchmen (0-1-1 overall) were not only equal on the scoreboard but finished with similar numbers in several statistical categories in the game.
Northern attempted 13 shots, including five on goal, to Hope's 14 and three, and the Polar Bears committed 11 fouls and had seven corner kicks to the Dutchmen's 15 and nine, respectively.
Senior Levi King (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) attempted a team-high three shots for Northern to go with two each from seniors Bryan Kern (Rocky River) and Seth Gundlach (Wilmington) and freshman Trevor Tabb (Toledo/Springfield).
Thomas DeVries attempted a game-high four shots for Hope.
The final score was indicative of a defensive battle, and the goalkeepers for each team did their part to keep the opponent off the scoreboard. Senior John Lombardo (Solon) made three saves for ONU while Hope's Daniel Hesselbein made five stops.
The Polar Bears had a corner kick with just under 20 seconds to play in the second overtime period but were unable to convert it into a viable scoring opportunity before time expired.
Next up for the Polar Bears is their third consecutive game against a team from Michigan, as they're set to host Concordia at 4 p.m. on Friday at Kerscher Stadium.
