GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team opened its 2021 season with a solid performance, falling late 2-1 at No. 3-ranked Calvin (Mich.) on Friday evening at Zuidema Field.
The Polar Bears fall to 0-1-0, while the Knights improve to 2-0-0.
Calvin broke a scoreless tie by scoring just 14 seconds before end of the first half to take a 1-0 lead into intermission.
Undaunted, Ohio Northern battled back and scored the equalizer in the 66th minute when freshman Trevor Tabb (Toledo/Springfield) scored in his first intercollegiate contest to even the score with 24:12 to play.
The Knights scored the match winner with 19:46 left to go up 2-1.
The Polar Bears kept pressing down the stretch and had a pair of corner kicks and a shot on goal in the final nine minutes, but CC would hang on for the victory.
Statistically the match was fairly even with Calvin leading in shots 14-10 and corner kicks 6-5.
Senior John Lombardo (Solon) had five saves in goal for ONU.
The Polar Bears will have a quick turnaround on their season-opening road trip with a 6 p.m. match at Hope (Mich.) on tap for Saturday evening.
