ADA — John Carroll scored with 2:23 left in in the second overtime to down the Ohio Northern men's soccer team 2-1 in an Ohio Athletic Conference battle on a cold, windy and wet afternoon at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears drop to 1-3-1 overall and are 1-3-1 in the OAC, while the league-leading Blue Streaks improve to 4-0-0, 4-0-0.
Freshman Cade Winchester (Louisville, Tenn./Alcoa) headed in a pass from freshman Ryan Augustine (Gibsonia, Pa./North Catholic) with 2:26 left before intermission to tie the match at 1-1.
JCU took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.
The defenses took over in the second half as the two squads combined for only five shots in the next 45 minutes.
Each team had a scoring opportunity in the first overtime and the match appeared to be heading for a tie as the clock wound down.
The Blue Streaks took a long shot off a counter attack that was blocked high into the air, where Jared Mattei headed the ball into the net in traffic for the match winner.
JCU out-shot ONU 13-7 and had a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Thursday at Heidelberg.
