ADA — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team bowed out of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in the quarterfinal round of the OAC Tournament as it fell to Marietta 1-0 on Tuesday evening at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears fall to 12-6-2 overall, while the Pioneers improve to 11-5-3 overall and move on to play at No. 1-seeded Otterbein in the semifinals of the tournament on Thursday evening.
Senior J.J. Fortner (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) paced the ONU offense with three shots, while senior Colin Johnson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) fired two shots.
Freshman Dylan Plank (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) led the Northern defense with five saves in the goal.
The matchup picked up where it left off in the regular season finale, as a defensive battle ensued from the start of the contest.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half, mustering a combined 11 shots in the first half.
It took just over 20 minutes into the second half before Marietta was able to strike and score what would prove to be the game winner.
In the final five minutes of the contest, ONU would put pressure on the Pioneer defense, outshooting the visitors 5-0, but could not score the equalizer as Marietta went on to claim the contest 1-0.
Northern will await the NCAA III Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 6 to see if it earns an at-large bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
