ADA — Senior J.J. Fortner (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) scored two first half goals to lead the Ohio Northern men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Wilmington on Tuesday evening at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 10-5-1 overall with the victory and move to 3-3-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Quakers fall to 7-7-2, 1-4-1.
Fortner has a team-best 12 goals this season and has scored five goals in ONU's last three contests.
The senior gave Northern the lead just 15 minutes into the contest as he corralled a deflected ball from a WC defender and struck the back of the net from 25 yards out.
From there, Northern would continue to pressure the Quakers, recording six of the next seven shots before Fortner gained control of a blocked shot from freshman Zachary Yoder (Goshen, Ind./Kamiakin) and scored from just outside of the penalty box in the 38th minute to seal the 2-0 victory.
Freshman Dylan Plank (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) earned the victory in the goal, posting his fifth shutout of the season and improving his record to 9-3-0 on the year.
The Polar Bears outshot Wilmington 21-4, and won the corner kick battle by a 6-1 margin.
Northern returns to action on Saturday evening as it travels to New Concord to take on Muskingum at 7 pm.
