NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. — Senior J.J. Fortner (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) scored a beautiful goal in the 71st minute to break a scoreless tie and give the Ohio Northern men's soccer team a 1-0 victory at Manchester (Ind.) on Wednesday afternoon at Good Field.
The Polar Bears, winners of five of their last six matches, improve to 5-2-1 overall. The Spartans fall to 3-4-0.
Fortner took a pass from freshman Joseph Jennings (Beavercreek) just outside the left hand side of the penalty box and blasted a shot to the far right-hand upper corner, deflecting off the crossbar before falling into the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Dylan Plank (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) had one save and recorded the second shutout of his career.
Ohio Northern out-shot Manchester 18-10 and eight corner kicks to none for the hosts.
The Polar Bears will return home on Saturday for a 7 pm match against Rose-Hulman (Ind.) at Kerscher Stadium.
