ADA -- Junior Chris Garbig (Wilder, Ky./Highlands) led the No. 6-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team as it opened Ohio Athletic Conference play and defeated Mount Union 1-0 Saturday evening at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 11-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the OAC, while the Purple Raiders fall to 2-4-3, 0-1-0.
Garbig scored the lone goal of the evening for the Polar Bears.
After a 30 minute lightning delay, a defensive battle would ensue before Northern could score its goal.
In the 82nd minute, junior Dakota Swisher's (Westlake/Westlake) cross into the 18-yard box was deflected before Garbig gathered the ball and beat the MtU keeper from 20 yards out to give Northern the 1-0 lead.
The Purple Raiders would threaten late in the contest, but the Polar Bear defense would hold strong as ONU went on to win 1-0.
"This is a new season for us," said head coach Brent Ridenour. "The OAC is a great conference and we are going to see a lot of games like this. Mount Union played a really great game, but defensively we were able to control the game."
Junior Dean McNeil (Medina/Medina) improved to 11-0-1 in the goal for Northern, posting one save.
McNeil now has 23 career shutouts, and moves into sole possesion of second place on the all-time shutout list at Ohio Northern.
Northern will return to action Wednesday evening as they welcome Otterbein to Kerscher Stadium at 7 pm.
