ADA — The No. 16-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team defeated Mount St. Joseph 5-1 in a delay-filled contest at the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic at Townsend Field.
The Polar Bears improve to a perfect 6-0 overall, while the Lions fall to 2-1-2.
Senior Matt Kinkopf led the way offensively for Northern as he posted two goals.
Seniors Brandon Homan, Patrick Sabol and junior J.J. Fortner also added goals for the Polar Bears.
Junior goalkeeper Dean McNeil improved to 6-0-0 on the year as he recorded two saves.
After two lightning delays suspended play early, Northern would waste no time as it scored two goals within the first 90 seconds of play.
Fortner would find the back of the net in the second minute after receiving a pass from senior David Janusz and beating the MSJ keeper to give Northern the quick 1-0 lead.
Second later, Kinkopf would push the lead to 2-0 after receiving a cross from Homan and one touching it passed the Lions keeper.
Homan would waste no time adding to the lead as he was able to find the back of the net in the seventh minute and extend the lead to 3-0.
Mount St. Joseph would get one back in the 28th minute before Kinkopf scored his second goal of the game in the 31st minute to make it 4-1 at the intermission.
Sabol would seal the Polar Bear victory in the 66th minute as he received a pass from fellow senior Adam Subasic and added an insurance goal to seal the 5-1 victory.
Northern will return to action Wednesday as they travel to Delaware to take on No. 8-ranked Ohio Wesleyan at 7 pm.
