ADA — In the first meeting between the two schools since 2011, the Ohio Northern men's soccer team defeated Oberlin 4-0 to improve to 2-0 Saturday evening at Kerscher Stadium.
Junior Dean McNeil posted a career-high nine saves and recorded his 16th career shutout to lead the Polar Bears.
"Oberlin is a very good program and that is a quality win for us," said head coach Brent Ridenour. "I thought we played great team defense today and I am happy Dean and the team earned a shutout."
The Polar Bears (2-0) jumped out to a quick first half lead as seniors David Janusz, Tommy Troy and sophomore Joseph Schulte each scored.
Janusz netted the first goal for the Polar Bears in the 26th minute as he beat the OC keeper with a header from senior Grant Allbritten to put Northern ahead 1-0.
Minutes later, the Polar Bears would extend the lead to 2-0 as Troy received a pass from senior Matt Kinkopf and beat the Otterbein goalie in the 28th minute.
Northern would add to its lead in the 42nd minute as Schulte received a pass from senior Nathan Libertowski to close out the first half and push the lead to 3-0 at the intermission.
Senior Patrick Sabol wasted no time in adding to the ONU lead in the second half as he received a pass from Kinkopf and put the Polar Bears ahead 4-0 to seal the win in the 50th minute.
The Polar Bears outshot the Yoemen by a 19-15 margin.
Northern will return to action Tuesday evening as they play host to Olivet (Mich.) at Kerscher Stadium at 7 pm.
