ADA — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team won its sixth consecutive season opener Thursday evening as they defeated Lawrence Tech (Mich.) 2-1 at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 1-0-0 on the year, while the Blue Devils fall to 2-1-0.
Senior forward Matt Kinkopf set up the first score of the evening after he one touched a deflected pass to senior David Janusz for the score in the 43rd minute.
ONU was able to extend its lead midway through the second half as senior Nathan Libertowski touched a pass to sophomore Anthony DeNoi through traffic to put the Polar Bears ahead 2-0 in the 66th minute.
"The atmosphere tonight was amazing. The support was fabulous for our first game and we hope our fans continue to support us like that throughout the season," said head coach Brent Ridenour.
The Blue Devils would get one back on Northern in the 88th minute but did not have enough time to complete the comeback as Northern went on to win 2-1.
"Those guys gave us a really good test for an opening game," said Ridenour. "They were a very talented team."
Junior goalkeeper Dean McNeil improved to 1-0-0 on the season.
McNeil recorded five saves during the contest.
The Polar Bears will return to action Saturday as they play the nightcap of a double header with the women's soccer team at Kerscher Stadium and host Oberlin at 7 pm.
