MARIETTA -- Sophomore J.J. Fortner led the Ohio Northern men's soccer team to the Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season title with a 6-0 victory at Marietta Saturday afternoon at Marietta Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 16-4-0 overall and 8-1-0 in the OAC, while the Pioneers fall to 9-9-1, 4-4-1.
With the victory, Ohio Northern won the OAC Regular Season title outright and claimed the No. 1 seed in next week's OAC Tournament.
Fortner paced the Polar Bear offense with two goals in the victory.
The Polar Bears exploded for four goals in the first 23 miniutes of play to take control early.
Fortner found the back of the net in the 10th minute to put ONU up 1-0.
Junior David Janusz would add to the Ohio Northern lead as he received a long pass from sophomore Grant Cayot and beat the Pioneer keeper to push Northern ahead 2-0 in the 15th minute.
In the 19th minute, junior Matt Kinkopf would dribble into the six yard box and score on a shot to the far post to make it 3-0.
After a failed clearance by the Marietta keeper, sophomore Chris Garbig would gain control of the ball and find the back of net in the 23rd minute to push the Northern lead to 4-0.
Northern would strike early in the second half as Fortner rebounded a shot in the 52nd minute and beat the goal keeper to give ONU the 5-0 lead.
Junior Nathan Libertowski would seal the victory in the 54th minute as he received a pass from junior Dustin Lorenzo off a free kick and beat the keeper with a header to give Ohio Northern the 6-0 victory.
Sophomore Dean McNeil earned the victory in goal for Ohio Northern and improved to 15-4-0 on the year. McNeil recorded his 14th career shutout and moved into third place all-time at Ohio Northern for career shutouts.
Northern outshot Marietta 20-6 on the evening and won the corner kick battle 10-1.
The Polar Bears will return to action Thursday when they host a Semifinal match of the OAC Tournament at Kerscher Stadium against either No. 4-seeded Heidelberg or No. 5-seeded Marietta.
