Matt Kinkopf's hat trick leads Men's Soccer past Thiel (Pa.) 9-0 in opening match of ONU Invitational

ADA — Junior Matt Kinkopf had a hat trick in the first 26 minutes of the match to lead the Ohio Northern men's soccer team to a 9-0 victory over Thiel (Pa.) in the opening match of the ONU Invitational Friday night at Kerscher Stadium.

The Polar Bears improve to 4-1-0 overall, while the Tomcats fall to 0-3-0.

Kinkopf scored in the fourth, 20th and 26th minutes and added an assist for a 7-point evening as ONU built an 8-0 lead at intermission.

He scored the first goal of the match at the 3:23 mark off an assist from junior Austin Horton.

Horton then made it 2-0 with a goal off an assist from Kinkopf at the 19:16 mark.

Junior Brandon Homas assisted Kinkopf on his second goal with 22:40 gone in the contest to put the Polar Bears up 3-0.

Kinkopf completed his hat trick with a penalty kick, one of two for the Polar Bears on the night, at the 25:54 mark of the first half.

The offensive onslaught continued as junior Patrick Sabol scored in the 29th and 39th minutes to make it 6-0.

Junior Colin Johnson made it 7-0 in the 42nd minute and junior Anthony Clark scored with just 34 seconds left in the half to make it 8-0.

ONU emptied the bench in the second half and the only scoring was a penalty kick by senior Josh Long with 15:54 left in the match.

Northern out-shot Thiel 32-5 in the contest.

There will be two matches on Saturday in the ONU Invitational, as ONU will face Brockport State (N.Y.) at 7:30 pm after Defiance and Thiel play at 5 pm.

Defiance and Brockport State will conclude the Invitational with a match at 2 pm on Sunday at Kerscher Stadium.
