ADA — The 13th-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team dropped a tough 3-1 game to fourth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan in a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon at the ONU Soccer Field.
With the win, the Battling Bishops improve to 6-1, while the Polar Bears fall to 6-2-1.
Even though Northern outshot Wesleyan 16-11, the Bishops were able to make the most of their scoring opportunities more frequently.
OWU took a 2-0 lead in the first half, with goals from Matt Bonfini in the 22nd minute and Tyler Bryant at the 38-minute mark.
The Polar Bears cut the deficit to one when senior Christian Huelsman took advantage of passes from juniors Nate Bascom and Craig Sumner in the 82nd minute.
Huelsman's goal was his third of the year, while Bascom recorded his third assist and Sumner's assist was his first.
Ohio Wesleyan pushed the lead to 3-1 less than two minutes later when Matt Shadoan completed a give-and-go, putting the ball into the corner of the net.
OWU's Travis Wall had two assists, while goalie Paul Hendricks made five saves to stifle the Polar Bear offense.
The Polar Bears will return to action Saturday as they host Muskingum to begin the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of their schedule at 3:30 p.m.
