ADA — The 13th-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team opened up Ohio Athletic Conference play with a dominant 3-0 win over Muskingum at the ONU Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears end their two-game losing skid and improve to 7-2-1 overall (1-0 OAC), while the Muskies fall to 3-5 (0-1 OAC).
ONU got on the board right away, when senior Cory Dobkins took the ball from a Musky defender and put a shot into the corner of the goal just 43 seconds into the game, his first of the season.
Northern pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute, when senior Abrim Mueller found a streaking Cameron Johnson down the middle of the field, followed by Johnson putting the ball past the goalie for his team-leading sixth goal of the year.
In the 85th minute, junior Nate Bascom made the most of a one-on-one with Muskingum goalie Hunter Huffman thanks to a nice pass from sophomore Jeremy Barnes, earning his fourth goal of the year.
Junior Mac Church earned his fifth shutout of the season, stopping the only shot he faced.
ONU's defense played well once again, allowing the Muskies to take just six shots, compared to 25 for Northern.
The Polar Bears will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Thomas More (Ky.) for a non-conference affair at 4 p.m.
