CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — Despite trailing by two goals with less than six minutes remaining, the No. 17 Ohio Northern men's soccer team battled back to defeat No. 22 Thomas More (Ky.) 4-3 in double overtime at The Bank of Kentucky Field on Tuesday evening.
With the comeback non-conference victory, the Polar Bears improve to 8-2-1, while the Saints suffer their first loss of the season and move to 6-1-1.
Down 3-1, senior Abrim Mueller scored back-to-back goals, including the game-tying shot with just eight seconds remaining in regulation, to tie the game at 3-3.
After a scoreless overtime period, junior Nate Bascom headed in a pass from senior Robert Sellers for his second game-winning goal of the season and fifth goal overall in the second overtime.
The Saints had a 2-0 lead at halftime after a pair of goals from Alex Oeswein in the 15th and 38th minutes.
ONU didn't get on the board until the 77th minute, when junior Cameron Johnson scored his team-leading seventh goal on an assist by senior Greg Stawicki to cut the lead to 2-1.
Thomas More pushed the lead back to two goals in the 80th minute when Oeswein completed a hat trick with his third goal of the game.
Mueller then scored his first goal at the 84:03 mark, before tying the game on his second-straight unassisted goal with the clock at 89:52.
The goals were Mueller's first two of the year, and also marks his first career multi-goal game.
Bascom's header came in the 103rd minute to win the game for ONU.
Northern outshot the Saints 36-11, with 17 of those on goal compared to seven for Thomas More.
Junior goalkeeper Mac Church made four saves to earn the win.
The Polar Bears will return to OAC play Saturday with a conference matchup at Mount Union, set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
