WILMINGTON — Behind two goals from senior Cory Dobkins and a shutout by junior goalie Mac Church, the No. 15-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team defeated Wilmington 4-0 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Williams Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Polar Bears improve to 13-2-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the OAC, while pushing their unbeaten streak to eight games. The Quakers fall to 9-5-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
The match was moved from the ONU Soccer Field to Wilmington's football stadium, which has artificial turf, due to heavy rains in the area Tuesday and Wednesday.
Dobkins connected on a free kick in the 12th minute to give ONU an early 1-0 lead.
Less than four minutes later, senior Christian Huelsman scored his fifth goal of the year when junior Chris Matejka's pass split the defense, giving him his sixth assist.
On another free kick, Dobkins beat Wilmington goalie Antonio Trujillo again to push ONU's lead to 3-0 in the 25th minute.
A Wilmington own goal in the 65th minute increased ONU's lead to 4-0.
Northern's defense was stellar once again, earning its fourth shutout in five games, led by Church's four saves for his ninth shutout of the season, most in the OAC.
ONU will be on the road again Saturday, as the team travels to John Carroll for a key OAC showdown at 6 p.m.
The Blue Streaks currently lead the conference with 18 points and an OAC record of 6-0, with the Polar Bears knocking on the door with 16 points and a 5-0-1 record.
