ADA — Sophomore Sebastian Michaud (Springboro) scored his first career hat trick, scoring a career-best four goals to lead the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team to an impressive 14-9 victory over Centre (Ky.)
The Polar Bears remain undefeated on the season at 3-0, while the Colonels fall to 2-2.
Centre, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament a year ago, raced to a 3-0 lead in the first 4:26 of the contest.
Northern scored three quick goals themselves in the final 2:16 of the first half, including a dazzling behind the back goal from Michaud with 20 seconds left and a nifty goal by senior Will Doran (Terrace Park/Summit Country Day) with one second left, to give ONU a 6-5 lead at intermission.
ONU tallied three more goals in the final 3:45 of the third quarter, capped by a goal with two seconds remaining by senior Christ Cranston (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) as the hosts led 11-7 after 45 minutes of play.
The Polar Bears then scored three more times in the first 7:27 of the fourth quarter to go up 14-8 and would not be threatened.
Junior Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) was outstanding in goal, stopping 13 of 22 shots on goal to earn the win.
Ohio Northern out-shot Centre 36-30 and won the ground ball battle 27-24.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Wednesday with a night contest at No. 2-ranked Gettysburg (Pa.)
