WESTERVILLE — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team dropped a tight 10-8 decision at Otterbein on Saturday in an Ohio Athletic Conference battle at Memorial Stadium.
The Polar Bears fall to 3-4 overall and are 2-3 in the OAC, while the Cardinals improve to 5-2, 4-1.
Northern jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first 7:30 of the game on goals by senior Joe O'Connell (Fishers, Ind.), junior Ethan Falsone (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and senior Pat Berthelsen-Leon (Bethpage, N.Y.).
But the Cardinals would answer with six straight over the next 12:38 to grab a 6-3 lead.
ONU scored the final three goals of the half when O'Connell, junior Christopher Cranston (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) and freshman Andrew Caliri (Lexington, Mass.) found the net to tie it at 6-6 at intermission.
The two teams traded goals in the third quarter and the game was even at 8-all heading into the fourth.
OU made it 9-8 just 1:44 into the period and tacked on an insurance goal with 3:41 left to play.
O'Connell finished with two goals and senior Cameron Marous (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) had a goal and three assists for ONU.
Northern out-shot Otterbein 33-31 and won the ground battle 24-23.
Sophomore Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) had 12 saves in goal for ONU.
The Polar Bears will return home on Wednesday to face Heidelberg in a non-conference contest at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
