ADA — Senior Pat Berthelsen-Leon (Bethpage, N.Y) scored four goals and had an assist to lead the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team in a tight 10-9 loss to Capital on a beautiful Wednesday evening at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears are Crusaders now have identical 3-1 records.
Wednesday's game does not count in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings, as the contest on April 17 in Bexley is designated as an OAC matchup.
Trailing 9-6, Ohio Northern rattled off three goals in a 1:21 span to tie the game at 9-9 with 10:36 left in the game.
The Crusders answered seven seconds later to go up 10-9.
Northern got off 11 shots in its final eight possessions of the game, but could not find the back of the net and CU held on for the win.
Sophomore Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) had 11 saves in goal for ONU.
Bethelsen-Leon scored the first goal of the gamejust 2:11 into the contest. He got his hat trick with two goals 10 seconds apart with :11 and :01 left in the first half as the Polar Bears led 5-4 at intermission.
His fourth and final goal tied the game at 9-9.
Ohio Northern out-shot Capital 54-37 and forced 26 turnovers while committing just 23.
CU won the ground ball battle 35-34.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday with a 1 pm OAC game at Baldwin Wallace.
