ADA — Junior Joe O'Connell (Fishers, Ind.) scored a career-high seven goals to lead the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team to an 18-9 victory over Alma (Mich.) on a sunny and chilly Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Scots fall to 1-2.
O'Connell scored four of his goals in the first half as ONU built a 10-4 lead at intermission.
Ohio Northern also got three goals from senior Cameron Marous (Brecksville), who extended his own school record with his 20th career hat trick.
In all, eight different Polar Bears scored goals and 10 players had at least one point in the game.
Freshman Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) improved to 3-0 in goal with seven saves in 49 minutes and a .500 save percentage.
Leading 13-6 after three periods, ONU put the game away with three goals in the first 3:13 of the fourth, including the sixth and seventh goals by O'Connell, before emptying the bench.
Senior Javon Smith (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) was outstanding on defense, picking up a career-high eight ground balls.
Northern played 48 players in the contest.
ONU outshot AC 55-31 and won the ground ball battle 46-27.
The Polar Bears will embark on a three-game road trip, beginning on March 1 at Rhodes (Tenn.)
