WASHINGTON, PA. — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team utilized eight second-quarter goals to cruise past nonconference foe Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) by a 15-7 scoreline Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
With the win, ONU improves to 1-1 on the season while W&J falls to 1-2.
Junior Cameron Marous (Brecksville) netted five goals and added two assists in the second period to lead the Polar Bear offense. The third-year attackman has nine goals through two games this season, having posted hat tricks in both contests.
Additionally, senior Nicholas Groves (Fishers, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and sophomore Joe O'Connell (Fishers, Ind.) each scored two goals.
Ohio Northern scored the game's first seven goals before the Presidents got on the scoreboard with 5:41 to go in the first half.
ONU then scored a remarkable three goals in 13 seconds to close the first-half scoring. Groves scored the first goal at the 4:48 mark and senior Chris DiMarco (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) added a goal at 4:40 and assisted Marous on a goal with 4:35 to go in the half, making the game 10-1 heading into the intermission.
Washington & Jefferson opened the second half with three consecutive goals, but two third-period goals from O'Connell kept the Polar Bears in control with a 12-5 lead after 45 minutes of action.
Northern outscored the Presidents 3-2 in the final stanza as senior Anthony Pavone (Bainbridge/Kenston), freshman Ben Gawronski (Dublin/Scioto), and sophomore Mason Schmeling (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) each found the back of the net.
Senior Alex Pizarro (Boonsboro, Md.) was credited with the win, stopping six-of-seven shots in net.
Senior William Peoples (Breckenridge, Colo./Summit) recorded six ground balls and DiMarco chipped in five to guide ONU to a 44-26 ground ball advantage.
The Polar Bears won 19-of-25 faceoffs. Peoples went 7-for-9 and DiMarco finished 6-for-8 on the day.
Ohio Northern will return to competition on Sunday, March 3 at Guilford (N.C.) as part of its annual Spring Break trip.
