ADA — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team was edged by John Carroll 9-7 in a battle of league leaders on Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears fall to 12-2 overall and are now in a three-way tie with John Carroll and Otterbein atop the Ohio Athletic Conference standings with 5-1 league marks.
JCU improves to 9-4 overall.
Junior Max Weese (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) had two goals and an assist to lead the ONU offense.
The teams traded goals in the first quarter and Ohio Northern went on top 4-2 with 8:37 left in the half after goals by Weese and sophomore Logan Krogman (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley).
JCU battled back with the next four goals to go up 6-4 at intermission.
Northern had a golden opportunity to regain momentum as the entered the second half on a 3-man advantage as JCU committed three penalties in the final seconds of the second quarter.
But the Blue Streak defense held and JCU picked up a goal at the 12:01 mark to go up 7-4.
Weese scored with 4:46 left in the third to make it 7-5.
Sophomore Chris DiMarco (Worthington) scored with 13:37 to play to pull ONU within 8-6 and junior Anthony Pavone scored the the 9:43 mark to get Ohio Northern within 8-7.
Northern would get four shots in the final minutes before JCU put the game away with goal with 20 seconds left o play.
Ohio Northern out-shot John Carroll 29-21.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Wednesday with a 7 pm contest against Otterbein with first place in the OAc on the line.
