CINCINNATI — Freshman Landen Long (Mason) scored 15 points and sophomore Brandon Waugh (Columbus/Northland) added 13 points, but the Ohio Northern men's basketball team dropped a 65-62 decision to Transylvania (Ky.) at the Mount Saint Joseph Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Harrington Center.
The Polar Bears fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 2-0.
Freshman C.J. Napier (Miamisburg/Bishop Fenwick) added 11 points for ONU.
TU was led by Gabe Schmitt with 16 points.
Northern trailed 39-27 at halftime, but rallied to within 56-54 with 7:08 left in the game.
But the Polar Bears would go cold, as TU would go on a 7-0 run over the next four minutes until a basket by senior Caleb Bryan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) with 3:13 left in the game made it 63-56.
Waugh scored with 38 seconds left to get ONU within 65-62.
Northern got the ball back with seven seconds left, but a long three-pointer by Waugh at the buzzer was off target.
Ohio Northern made 22-of-56 field goals for 39.3 percent and were just 8-of-30 from 3-point range for 26.7 percent. Transylvania was a blistering 26-of-44 from the floor foe 59.1 percent and won the rebounding battle 30-23.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Friday with a 7 pm contest at Denison.
