Horstman’s trey in closing seconds gives Men’s Basketball a 63-60 comeback win over Hanover
HANOVER, Ind. —Sophomore Jared Horstman hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in the game to give the Ohio Northern men's basketball team a 63-60 come-from-behind victory over Hanover (Ind.) Sunday afternoon at Collier Arena.
The Polar Bears are now 3-1 on the season while the Panthers fall to 3-1.
Horstman finished with five points, all in the final 16 seconds of the game. Senior Scott Schnelle led the Polar Bears with 12 points while sophomore Dominique Royal chipped in 11 points.
Hanover took control early, going up by as much as 12 points and led 41-30 at the half.
Northern would open up the second half with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 43-39 with 14:36 left to play.
Schnelle scored four points while Royal and freshman Adam Bair registered two and freshman Isaiah Roux added a free throw.
The Polar Bears would cut the lead down to 50-49 with 8:36 remaining when sophomore Taylor Kuhlman took a pass from Schnelle and knocked down a three.
Hanover would push their lead back out to 60-55 with 1:51 remaining on a layup by Mike Case.
Northern would then score the next eight points to finish out the game.
Junior Tony Meyer knocked down a three with 1:38 remaining to cut the deficit to 60-58.
After a few defensive stops Horstman nailed his 3-pointer, giving the Polar Bears their first lead since the beginning of the game.
The Polar Bears then forced a turnover and Horstman sank two free throws with three seconds left and Ryan Nowicki's three was off the mark as time expired allowing the Polar Bears to walk away with the win.
Northern shot 24-of-50 (48.0 percent) from the field and 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) from behind the arc while the Panthers were 24-of-46 (54.3 percent) and 6-of-15 (40.0 percent) in 3-pointers.
The Polar Bears narrowly won the rebounding battle by grabbing 26 to the Panthers 25.
Ohio Northern will be on the court again on Saturday when they travel to Muskingum to open Ohio Athletic Conference action at 3 p.m.
