Pennington’s 3-pointer in the closing seconds leads Men’s Basketball to 72-71 overtime victory
GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Freshman Lucas Pennington drained a 3-pointer with seven seconds left in overtime to give the Ohio Northern men's basketball team a thrilling 72-71 overtime win over Gettysburg (Pa.) in the first round of the Days Inn Tournament at Bream Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears open the 2011-12 season 1-0, while the Bullets fall to 0-2.
The first half, which ended with a 32-32 score, was tight all the way through with seven ties and no lead larger than five points.
Northern came out of halftime and used a quick five-point spurt to take a 37-32 lead with a little more than 17 minutes left to play.
Junior Taylor Kuhlman knocked down a jumper at 12:30 to give the Polar Bears their largest lead of the game at 45-39.
Northern would push their lead out to six points again when sophomore Brandon Rushton took a pass from junior Tony Meyer and knocked down a trey to push the lead to 52-46 with 10:18 left.
Rushton finished with a team-high 20 points.
Gettysburg would battle back and take a 55-54 lead with 4:39 remaining on a 3-pointer by Tim Lang.
The Bullets would extend their lead to 63-60 but sophomore Jared Horstman nailed a three with 18 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime.
The Polar Bears took a 64-63 lead in overtime when Horstman made one of two free throws.
Gettysburg countered with a layup by Lang to take a 65-64 lead with 3:36 left.
The teams would trade buckets on the next few possessions before Rushton knocked down a jumper to tie the game at 69.
The Bullets took a 71-69 lead with 16 seconds left when Alex Zurn scored.
Northern responded with Pennington's three and the Pioneers' Brandon Trelease's final shot was off the mark as time expired.
Senior Scott Schnelle chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds while Horstman finished with 10 points and six boards.
Zurn led Gettysburg with 21 points.
The Polar Bears were 26-of-48 (.542) from the field and a solid 15-of-18 (.833) from the free throw line.
Ohio Northern will be in action tomorrow when it plays in the Days Inn Tournament championship against Hood (Md.). Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
