Late Touchdown lifts White to wild 21-14 victory over Black in Football scrimmage

ADA — Senior James McDougald (Bowie, Md./Bridge Tutorial) caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from senior Tyler Smith (Milford) with 10 seconds left to give the White team a wild 21-14 victory over the Black squad in a football scrimmage on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
With the score knotted at 14-all, White took over at its 28-yard line with 25 seconds left in the game.
Smith hit McDougald down the right sideline for a 35-yard gain on next play to put the ball at the 37 with 15 seconds left.
The pair hooked up on the same play for the 37-yard game-winner on the next snap, capping a wild finish.
White led 7-0 after two quarters, setting up a fantastic finish in the final 15 minutes of the 45-minute game.
White took the second half kickoff and marched to the Black 21-yard line.
Freshman Ed Manning (Sanford, Fla./Seminole) blocked the ensuing 39-yard field goal attempt and junior Landon Plank (Ashland) returned it 42 yards to the White 10-yard line.
Three plays later, freshman Blaze Lauer (Lake Orion, Mich.) ran in from 2 yards out to get Black within 7-6.
White then marched back into Black territory, but the Black defense held on a 4th-and-1 play at the 25 and Black took over with 5:11 left in the game.
On the next play from scrimmage, junior receiver Austin Eick (Rossford) pulled up on a jet sweep and threw a 74-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Jette Morgan (Wooster) to put Black ahead 12-7.
Junior Jake Tanski (Eastlake/North) then completed a 2-point conversion pass to Morgan to make it 14-7 with 5:01 to play.
Senior A.J. Marks (Guysville/Alexander) returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a score to tie the game at 14-14.
Black picked up one first down and punted the ball deep into White territory at the 12 with 1:53 left.
White managed just one first down and had to punt, giving Black the ball at its 32 with 49 seconds remaining.
But the Black team could only muster four yards and punted the ball back to White, which took over at its 28 with 25 ticks to go, setting up the two dramatic long passes that would win the game.
White out-gained Black 349-207 in the game, including a 114-2 advantage on the ground, and held a 27:41-17:19 advantage in time of possession.
Individually, Smith was 10-of-12 passing for 134 yards and two scores to lead the White team. In all, eight different players attempted passes and 13 different players had at least one rushing attempt in the game.
Defensively, junior Johnny Rupp (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) had five tackles and a sack for the White squad and Manning had six tackles and the blocked field goal to lead the Black.
