One Goal Means Difference In Close Loss To ONU

ADA, Ohio - The Wittenberg men's soccer team went to Ohio Northern looking for its first win of the 2009 campaign, but will keep searching after a close 1-0 loss at the hands of the Polar Bears, dropping to 0-4-1 on the season.

The Tigers gave up one goal with five minutes to go in the first period, and ONU kept Wittenberg out of the net to seal the match. The Polar Bears outshot Wittenberg by a 21-12 margin, the Tigers attempting six in each period. Of the shots for each team, ONU managed to put seven on goal, while Wittenberg put four on goal.

Wittenberg's sophomore goalkeeping pair of Michael Lambeck (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and David Rea (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) split the game, each playing 45 minutes. Lambeck manned the net in the first, making three saves despite giving up the match's lone goal, while Rea played the second period and made three saves of his own. Lambeck would later return to the field as a forward in the second period.

Eight players distributed Wittenberg's 12 shots, including one from Lambeck. Senior forward Brian Glenn (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) paced the Tigers with three, sophomores Stefan Latham (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) and Declan McBride (Surrey, England/Tasis) each shot twice, and five other Tigers attempted one shot. Tigers to land a shot on goal included Latham, McBride, sophomore Daniel Broidy (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) and junior Robbie Farquhar (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley).

The Tigers return to Springfield this weekend to host the Wittenberg Invitational, featuring Albion, Calvin and Otterbein. Wittenberg will play Albion on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m. and Calvin on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 4:30 p.m. during the tournament.
