Women's Swimming and Diving wins home opener against Heidelberg 161-56

Ada — The Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team wins 12 of 13 events in an 161-56 victory in its home opener agaisnt Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg on Friday evening at the ONU Sports Center Natatorium.

Meet Highlights
- Three swimmers, seniors Katie Bend (Carmel, Ind.), junior Mara Brown (Fremont/Ross) and freshman Ashleigh Nelson (Byron Center, Mich.) each won three events to pace the Polar Bears.
- Bend swept the distance races, winning the 1000-yard free in 11:58.55 and the 500 free in 5:57.90. She was also on ONU's winning 200 free relay team that touched in 1:47.42.
- Brown won the 200 fly in 2:19.42 and was on both the 200 free and 200 medley relay (1:57.73) teams.
- Nelson was also on both winning relay teams and touched first in the 200 free in 2:07.35.
- Fifth-year senior Shelby Starkey (Bellefontaine) won the 200 I.M. in 2:27.79 and was on the 200 medley relay team.
- Junior Annie Richters (Troy/Miami East) won the 200 breast in 2:54.41 and was on the 200 medley relay team on the 200 medley relay team.
- Sophomore Meghan Mattison (Easton, Pa.) won the 200 back in 2:31.14 and was on the 200 free relay team.
- Freshman Courtney Wenker (Cincinnati/Indian Hill) swept the diving events unopposed, taking the 1-meter with 149.40 points an the 3-meter with 157.50 points.
- Junior Hannah Eversole (Cincinnati/Mount Notre Dame) won the 100 free in :58.88.
Notables
- The meet consisted of 13 events, including 9 individual races, two diving events and two relays.
- The Polar Bears posted first-place finishes in 12 of the 13 events.
- The meet was the third of 11 regular season contests for Ohio Northern.
- Austin Veltman is now 23-22 in his sixth season as head coach of the Polar Bears.
