Transue, Thompson win titles to lead Wrestling in season opener

ALLIANCE — Junior Seth Transue (Plain City/Dublin Jerome) and sophomore Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) each won weight class titles to lead the Ohio Northern wrestling team at its season-opening Mount Union Invitational on Saturday at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
The Polar Bears finished fourth of nine teams overall with 125.5 points, but were first of among the four NCAA Division II schools that participated.
NCAA Division II schools finished 1,2,3 with Gannon (Pa.) winning the team title with 184.5 points. Lake Erie was second with 142 points, Bellarmine (Ky.) was third with 140.0 and Seton Hill (Pa.) was fifth with 95 points.
Transue went 4-0 with a pin, a tech fall and a major decision to win the 125-pound weight class.
Thompson received a first round bye, then won three consecutive matches with one pin to win the 184 weight class with a 3-0 mark.
Senior Clayton Davidson (Kirtland) placed second at 174 pounds with a 3-1 record.
Junior Jeff Andrews (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) and sophomore Schuyler Caprella (Harrod/Allen East) each placed fourth with 4-2 records at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively.
Sophomore Austin Keeley (Marysville, Mich.) placed sixth at Heavyweight. He was 6-1 before bowing out in the final two consolation rounds due to injury default.
The Polar Bears will begin the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday with a 7 pm home match against Otterbein.
