Kwiat, Jones lead No. 17-ranked Wrestling on Day 1 of Wheaton (Ill.) Pete Willson Invitational

WHEATON, Ill. — Seniors Kyle Kwiat and Jeremy Jones made into the final eight of their respective weight classes to lead the No. 17-ranked Ohio Northern wrestling team on Day 1 of the Wheaton (Ill.) Pete Willson Invitational on Friday.

Jones guaranteed himself a top-eight finish by posting a 4-1 record at 133 pounds.

He got a pin, a major decision and two decisions and will compete in the consolation quarterfinals against fourth-seeded Austin Binish Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday morning.

Jones is now 18-15 on the year.

Kwiat, the No. 1-ranked and top-seeded wrestler at 174 pounds, won by tech fall and by decision to advance into the semifinals at 174 pounds.

The tech. fall was his NCAA-best 17th of the season as Kwiat improves to 30-3 on the season.

He will face fourth-seeded Dan Schiferi of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday.

Junior Jerry Pasquale, sophomore J.P. Hoopes and sophomore Kyle Brezovec also won matches on Friday, but were eliminated in the double-elimination tournament.

The Polar Bears will wrap up the Pete Willson Invitational on Saturday.
