ADA - The Ohio Northern softball team swept John Carroll 1-0, 4-3 Monday afternoon in a double header at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 15-6 overall and 6-2 Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Blue Streaks fall to 14-8 overall, 5-3 OAC.
In game 1, junior Miranda Huddle plated the games only run following a John Carroll two out error in the bottom of the seventh that would seal the ONU victory.
Freshman Kirsten Lightel pitched a complete game recording eight strikeouts and giving up just four hits.
The Polar Bears threatened in the bottom of the third as freshman Anna Martin reached third on a two out fielders choice but John Carroll's pitcher, Rachel Byrnes was able to get a fly out to center ending the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Ohio Northern was able to retire the threatening Blue Streaks as Lightel fielded a ground ball that turned into a routine double play.
The ONU defense remained perfect for the final three innings of the game recording no errors and giving up just two hits.
In game 2 of the double header the Polar Bears struck early as Martin, Huddle and sophomore Megan Hupp were all able to score in the bottom of the third off errors from the John Carroll defense.
Senior Kelly Sheridan tacked on one more run in the inning as she singled to right field scoringjunior Amanda Lahti.
The Blue Streaks responded in the top of the fourth as they were able to plate one run following a bases loaded single to left.
John Carroll threatened the ONU lead once more in the top of the seventh as Alyssa Coleman hit a 2 RBI homer to move within one run, 4-3.
Sophomore pitcher Paige Ordean was able to hold off the Blue Streaks as she struck out the next batter sealing the 4-3 win.
Sheridan led the Polar Bears from the plate recording three hits and 1 RBI.
The Polar Bears are next in action Wednesday as they travel to Otterbein for an OAC match-up starting at 3 pm.
