Nolan Huey shatters 400 I.M. record to lead Men's Swimming & Diving on Day 2 of OAC Championships

AKRON — Sophomore Nolan Huey (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) shattered the 400 I.M. league and school record to lead the Ohio Northern men on the second day of the 2018 Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium.
Huey set his second OAC record of the championships and his third ONU record in the meet with a 4:04.08 time in the 400 I.M. prelims, then shattered that mark with a 3:59.65 clocking in the finals, breaking the league and school record by more than four seconds.
He also bettered the NCAA "B" Cut by nearly three seconds and topped the 16-year old previous OAC record of 4:04.80 set in 2002 by Eric Richmond of John Carroll by a full five seconds.
Junior Pete He (Mason) won a tightly contested 100 fly out of lane six, touching first in :50.27 to claim his first OAC title in the event by just .15 of a second.
The 200 medley relay team of Huey, junior Anthony Ferrell (Canton/Glen Oak), He and senior Ian Simpson (Strongsville) won the opening race of the evening, finishing the 200 medley relay in 1:32.56, to claim the seventh OAC crown in the past eight years in the event for the Polar Bears.
Simpson also finished third in the 100 back in :51.95, earning All-Conference honors for the third time in his career in the race.
Ferrell also earned All-Conference accolades in the 100 breast, finishing third in :57.31. ONU placed three others in the top eight in the event, as senior Conor Cassara (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) was fourth in :58.08, senior Thomas Golba (Dayton/Alter) was sixth in :58.83 and freshman Patrick Reed (Charlestown, W.Va./Washington) was seventh in :58.97.
Senior Braden Kuhn (Tiffin/Calvert) placed second in the 1-meter diving with a career-best 456.05 points to earn all-Conference honors for the second time in his career. His 456.05 points also surpassed the NCAA "B" Cut of 440 points.
Kuhn also won the event in 2016 with 395.55 points.
Freshman Dylan Boyd (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) tied for fourth with a career-best 276.45 points and freshman Jacob Cordle (Lancaster) was sixth with a career-best 246.20 points.
The Polar Bears are in second place out of five teams with 516.5 points through 13 of the 20 events.
John Carroll is in first place with 560.5 points, Mount Union is third with 459 points, Baldwin Wallace is fourth with 226 points and Wilmington is fifth with 213 points.
The top three finishers in each individual event and the top two relay teams earn All-Conference honors.
The Polar Bears are gunning for their 13th OAC Championships crown under 14th-year head coach Peggy Ewald.
The final of the three-day championships is Saturday with prelims at 10 am and finals at 5:30 pm.
