Women's Swimming and Diving opens season with 1-2 record at Bethel (Ind.) Quad-Meet

ELKHART, Ind. — The Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team opened its 2023-24 season on Saturday with a 1-2 record at the Bethel (Ind.) Quad-Meet at the Elkhart Aquatics Center.
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern (1-2), Aquinas (Mich.) (1-3), Bethel (Ind.) (2-1), Hillsdale (Mich.) (3-0)
- Venue: Elkhart Aquatics Center, Elkhart, Ind.
Meet Highlights
- Ohio Northern defeated Aquinas (Mich.) 145-138 and fell to Bethel (Ind.) 223-63 and NCAA Division II Hillsdale (Mich.) 223.5-54.5.
- Freshman Courtney Wenker (Cincinnati/Indian Hill) led ONU with a 2nd place in the 3-meter diving with 170.00 points. She was also 3rd in the 1-meter diving with 168.55 points.
- Freshman Melina Roberts (Westlake) was 3rd in the 200 free in 2:21.18 and was 6th in the 100 fly in 1:05.62.
- Senior Katie Bend (Carmel, Ind.) was 5th in the 1650 free in 20:13.24.
- Junior Hannah Eversole (Cincinnati/Mt. Notre Dame) was 6th in the 100 back in 1:05.75 and was 7th in the 200 back in 2:19.73.
- Junior Mara Brown (Fremont/Ross) was 6th in the 100 breast in 1:13.04, was 7th in the 200 breast in 2:42.63 and was 7th in the 200 I.M. in 2:24.30.
- Freshman Ashleigh Nelson (Byron Center, Mich.) had 7th place finishes in the 50 free (:26:61) and the 100 free (:59.54).
- Junior Morgan Fernandez (Huber Heights/Wayne) was 7th in the 200 free in 2:36.77.
Notables
- The meet consisted of 16 events - 2 relays, 2 diving events and 12 individual races.
- All four teams competed together and the meet was scored with six different head-to-head results.
- The meet was the first of 11 regular season contests for Ohio Northern.
- Austin Veltman is now 21-22 in his sixth season as head coach of the Polar Bears.
