Wrestling posts third-highest GPA in country, has seven named Scholar All-America by National Wrestling Coaches Association

ADA — The Ohio Northern wrestling team made quite a haul as the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced its annual Scholar All-America honors for 2023-24.
ONU earned Scholar All-America Team honors, posting the third-highest GPA among NCAA Division III schools with an impressive 3.786.
The Polar Bears also had seven student-athletes named NCAA Division III Scholar All-Americans.
Juniors Adam Myers (Springfield/Shawnee), Colin Mellott (Wapakoneta), Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.), Jacob Reed (Lancaster), Jayden Jones (Ashland) and Teagan Hendricks (Jamestown/Greenview) and freshman Flint Guerra (Lebanon) were among 418 individuals from 100 institutions to receive the award.
Myers, Reed and Hendricks all earned NWCA Scholar All-American honors for the third consecutive season.
Myers was named First Team All-Conference and is a two-time Academic All-OAC selection. This season, he posted a 29-13 record at 174 pounds.
He now has a career mark of 68-34 with 17 pins.
Reed is a three-time All-American, finishing second at this year's NCAA Championships after third place finishes in 2022 and 2023.
This season, Reed was 29-1 with 12 pins. He is a three-time First Team All-Conference honoree and a two-time Academic All-OAC award winner.
In three seasons at ONU, Reed boasts an 116-7 record with 44 pins.
Hendricks qualified for the NCAA Championships this season and is a two-time Academic All-OAC selection, finishing 27-10 with 10 pins at 165 pounds.
In three years at ONU, he is 80-36 overall with 30 pins.
Mellott, Layman and Jones are all two-time NWCA Scholar All-Americans.
Mellott is a two-time Academic All-OAC honoree, finishing this season with a record of 32-16 with 10 pins. He is 76-44 in his ONU career.
Layman is a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier. He is also a two-time All-OAC First Team and Academic All-OAC selection.
This season Layman went 34-12 with 7 pins at 184 pounds.. He is 94-44 overall in three seasons at ONU.
Jones was 23-14 with 10 pins at 157 pounds this season. He owns a career mark of 61-35 with 16 pins.
He is also an Academic All-OAC honoree.
Guerra went 18-8 with 10 pins at 157 pounds in his first season at Ohio Northern.
The Polar Bears finished 17-7 in dual meets and were second in the OAC with a 6-1 record in 2023-24, finishing the season ranked No. 12 in the NWCA Tournament Poll and No. 23 in the NWCA Dual Poll under 36th-year head coach Ron Beaschler.
