NEW CONCORD — Sophomore Ashley Lenser (Brookville) pitched her second straight shutout and senior Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.) hit a pair of homers to lead the Ohio Northern softball team in a 1-0, 4-3 doubleheader sweep of John Carroll on Saturday at Bracken Field.
The Polar Bears have now won five straight games and improve to 17-11 overall and 7-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Blue Streaks fall to 13-11, 3-7.
Lenser allowed just four hits in her Game 1 shutout after throwing a six-hit shutout in a 9-0 win at Wilmington on Wednesday. She walked two and struck out four Saturday to improve to 9-5 on the season.
In what turned into a pitchers' duel, Danielle Orendi allowed just five hits and one unearned run to go with eight strikeouts over seven innings for JCU.
The Polar Bears scored the game's lone run on an RBI single from sophomore Mariana Alejandro (Gibsonburg) that plated Lenser in the fifth inning.
Senior Allie Bican (Solon) also shined in the pitching circle on Saturday, recording 12 strikeouts in a complete-game effort in Game 2. She allowed the three runs on five hits and no walks.
Bican now has 240 career strikeouts, which ranks fifth all-time at ONU.
Motylinski paced the ONU offense with two home runs and a double.
Motylinski now has 14 career home runs, which is tied for ninth all-time at ONU.
Senior Lauren Walls (Grove City) added a homer of her own as part of a two-hit game.
Sophomore Callie Rosser (Republic/Monroeville), fifth-year senior Abby Elliott (Loveland/Ursuline) and junior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) also tallied two hits in the game.
Mackenzie Stease led JCU with two hits, including a home run.
Stease opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, but Motylinski singlehandedly tied the score courtesy of her solo home runs in the second and sixth frames.
The Blue Streaks took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Bella Carcioppolo.
However, ONU had an answer in the seventh after Rosser led off with a double.
Walls followed with her team-leading third home run of the season that scored what proved to be the game-winning runs.
Bican closed out the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh with a popout, flyout and strikeout to secure the victory for ONU.
The Polar Bears return to action on Wednesday when they host a doubleheader against OAC foe Otterbein at 3 p.m.
